Those black streaks are Gloeocapsa Magma, an algae-like bacteria that feed on the limestone in the shingles. While it may take months (or years) for this bacteria to evolve into moss and fully compromise your roof, it’s important to not let this process get started. To properly treat this issue, we follow the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association recommendations: sodium hypochlorite applied at low-pressure to kill the algae at its root while not damaging the granules in the shingles. This process (called “Soft Washing”) is challenging and dangerous, so “please don’t try this at home”.
